Endometriosis and Mental Health: Is There a Relation?

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects many women, in addition to the complications already known, new findings suggest that there is a strong relationship between this and women’s mental health. Thus, the association with several severe psychiatric comorbidities, such as anxiety and depression deserve attention, so that professional care is effective and assertive. Table of Contents Toggle Pathogenesis of Endometriosis Endometriosis and Women’s Mental Health Clinical practice Bibliographic references Pathogenesis of Endometriosis It is one of the gynecological diseases that most affects women, this dysfunction is characterized by the disordered growth of tissue that implants in the ovaries, pelvic peritoneum and also in the rectovaginal septum. One of its main complications is the chronic pain which affects about 75% of women with this disease. Being that the pain is capable of negatively impacting women’s quality of life and decreasing sociability and social well-being, a fact demonstrated by a recent study that demonstrated endometriosis, by itself, related to the development of depression among women. Endometriosis and Women’s Mental Health In addition, symptoms of anxiety they are also more frequent in this population. In this sense, the study carried out an analysis between the phenotypic association of pathology with anxiety, depression and eating disorders. Therefore, women with endometriosis are more likely to develop such clinical conditions, illustrating their close relationship with women’s mental health.. This association, in turn, can be and part explained by the pleiotropy between endometriosis and depression that probably contributes to the development of these psychic disorders. In this sense, the management and treatment of the condition it is fundamental for the quality of life of women to increase, also improving social life, their career, sexual health and concomitantly their mental health and psychological well-being. Therefore, it is possible to affirm that there is a direct relationship between the development of endometriosis and the mental health of women, it is essential that integrated and multidisciplinary care be done in order to treat this pathology. Clinical practice Not surprising in endometriosis are CRP levels, a commonly assessed biomarker of acute systemic inflammation are elevated, being an important parameter of clinical follow-up in the reduction of inflammation. Thus, nutritional strategies in endometriosis consist of: high-fiber diet, supplementation with omega 3 and vitamin C, as well as running pro-inflammatory foods from the diet.
